People who commit heinous crime like rape shouldn’t be acquitted says Rani Mukerji

Actress Rani Mukerji, who is enjoying success of his recently released film ‘Mardaani 2’, feels that people who commit heinous crime like rape shouldn’t be acquitted. She added that such people should get strict and maximum punishment for their act.

The Supreme Court is set to hear a review plea filed one of the four men convicted in the 2012 Delhi Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case. The petition has been filed by Akshay Kumar who is the lone Nirbhaya convict not to have filed a review plea until now. The Supreme Court had last year rejected the review petitions filed by the three other convicts -- Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh. All the four men were convicted for the 2012 rape and murder a 23-year-old woman who came to be called Nirbhaya. All have been sentenced to die.

Talking about the development on Nirbhaya case, Rani said, “I feel that people who commit heinous crimes like this should definitely get a punishment. When a girl or a woman lose her life and after the incident, the kind of trauma that girl’s family go through is unimaginable so, I feel that people who commit such crimes shouldn’t be acquitted. They should get strict and maximum punishment for their act.”

The cop thriller has managed to rake in another Rs 3 crore at the ticket counters on Monday. 'Mardaani 2' which opened up at Rs 3.75 crore saw a good rise in its collection on the weekend but the Monday collection seems to be steady. With nearly Rs 21 crore from the first 4 days, Rani's 'Mardaani 2' look adamant to dominate the box office.

Talking about audience response to the film, Rani said, “We are getting really good response for the film. I am feeling really happy that we have been able to send across the message of women empowerment in the entire country through our film. After watching the film, women are sending me messages like they are feeling confident and empowered, I think that’s the most heartening response that I could get.”

In ‘Mardaani 2’, Shivani Shivaji Roy, a policewoman played by Rani Mukerji attempts to hunt down a young and ferocious man who goes on raping and murdering women.

When asked Rani whether she has gone through experience of eve-teasing in life and what was her response to that, she said, “I straight away slapped a guy who misbehaved with me. Since childhood, I have been following Goddess Durga so, I have slapped countless people on several occasions.”

‘Mardaani 2’ is directed by Gopi Puthran and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films.
