Cult-Horror Classic "Tumbbad" Returns to Cinemas for Special Re-Release
Sohum Shah Films has officially announced an exciting re-release of the critically acclaimed cult-horror film Tumbbad. Fans and newcomers alike will have the chance to experience the chilling tale on the big screen once more starting September 13, 2024. The announcement came with a striking new poster and a message from the official Sohum Shah Films handle: “Doston, We are arriving!! It's time for #Tumbbad. Experience in cinemas again on 13th September, 2024!”
Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, Tumbbad has solidified its place in Indian cinema as a unique entry into the horror genre. The film is set in the village of Tumbbad in Maharashtra, where Vinayak Rao, portrayed by Sohum Shah, embarks on a perilous quest to uncover a hidden treasure. What starts as a seemingly straightforward treasure hunt quickly descends into a nightmarish exploration of folklore and human greed.
The film was produced by Sohum Shah, Aanand L. Rai, Mukesh Shah, and Amita Shah, with a creative team that significantly contributed to its success. Pankaj Kumar’s masterful cinematography and Sanyukta Kaza’s precise editing were crucial in crafting the film’s haunting atmosphere. The score, composed by Jesper Kyd, alongside a song by Ajay–Atul, further amplified the film's eerie and immersive experience.
Tumbbad premiered in the critics' week section of the 75th Venice International Film Festival, marking a milestone as the first Indian film to be showcased there. Its international festival journey didn’t stop there; it also captivated audiences at the 2018 Fantastic Fest, Sitges Film Festival, Screamfest Horror Film Festival, El Gouna Film Festival, the 23rd International Film Festival of Kerala, Morbido Film Fest, Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, and Nitte International Film Festival.
Upon its release on October 12, 2018, Tumbbad was met with widespread acclaim. Critics lauded its innovative storytelling, meticulous production design, and captivating cinematography. The film garnered eight nominations at the 64th Filmfare Awards, winning three prestigious awards: Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Sound Design.
