Oscilloscope Labs Unveils Trailer for Universal Language

Oscilloscope Labs has released the first trailer for Universal Language, an innovative and surreal film hailing from Canada. Directed by Matthew Rankin, who also stars in the film, Universal Language is set to intrigue audiences with its unique narrative and visual style. The film marks Rankin’s second feature, following his critically acclaimed debut.

The film features a notable cast including Matthew Rankin, Pirouz Nemati, Rojina Esmaeili, Danielle Fichaud, and Sobhan Javadi. It unfolds in a bizarre, dreamlike space that exists somewhere between Tehran and Winnipeg, weaving together the lives of its characters in unexpected and mysterious ways.

Negin and Nazgol, two grade schoolers, discover a sum of money frozen in the ice and embark on a quest to acquire it. Massoud, a tour guide, leads a group of increasingly confused tourists through the monuments and historic sites of Winnipeg. Matthew, who plays a fictionalized version of himself, quits his monotonous government job in Québec and sets off on an enigmatic journey to visit his mother.

Universal Language explores themes of space, time, and personal identity, blending them into a surreal comedy of misdirection. The screenplay is a collaborative effort by Ila Firouzabadi, Pirouz Nemati, and Matthew Rankin, ensuring a rich and multifaceted narrative.

Set for release in February 2025, Universal Language promises to be a distinctive addition to the world of cinema, offering a fresh take on storytelling with its imaginative approach and cross-cultural narrative. The trailer provides a tantalizing preview of the film’s otherworldly charm and inventive humor, setting the stage for what is expected to be a memorable cinematic experience.
