Netflix Unveils First Trailer for “The Piano Lesson”

Netflix has just dropped the first official trailer for “The Piano Lesson,” a highly anticipated adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play.

“The Piano Lesson” stands out not only for its source material but also for its impressive lineage behind the camera. The film is produced by Denzel Washington and features his son, John David Washington, in a leading role. Malcolm Washington, another son, makes his feature directorial debut with this project. The involvement of the Washington family adds a personal and profound touch to the adaptation.

The film boasts an all-star cast that brings August Wilson’s complex characters to life. Samuel L. Jackson stars as the uncle caught in the crossfire of family strife, while John David Washington plays the brother determined to sell the family’s prized heirloom piano. Danielle Deadwyler portrays the sister fiercely dedicated to preserving the family’s heritage, and the cast is rounded out by Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, Jerrika Hinton, Gail Bean, and Corey Hawkins.

Set within the Charles Household, the film revolves around the contentious battle over a family heirloom—a grand piano that symbolizes both history and discord. John David Washington’s character wishes to sell the piano to build the family fortune, while Danielle Deadwyler’s character is resolute in keeping it as a living testament to their heritage. Samuel L. Jackson’s character tries to mediate the conflict, but the tensions reveal deeper, unresolved issues from the past.

The screenplay for “The Piano Lesson” is penned by Virgil Williams and Malcolm Washington, providing a modern take on Wilson’s celebrated work.

“The Piano Lesson” is set to debut in select U.S. theaters on November 8, 2024, before streaming on Netflix starting November 22, 2024.
