Commercial And Parallel Cinema Differentiation Is Blurred Says Nana Patekar

Veteran actor Nana Patekar, who is making a comeback with The Vaccine War, said that lines between commercial cinema and parallel cinema have blurred.

Nana Patekar was interacting with Newshelpline during the trailer launch of his next release, The Vaccine War.

When asked parallel and commercial cinema lines are blurring, Nana said, “The lines have been blurred, there was time when commercial and parallel were different, but today there is no difference between the two, ever since the OTT platform came into existence, every kind of cinema has found its voice, and as per view, you get paid your money, so parallel cinema thing isn’t there anymore.”

Further slamming the current Nepo-talent base in India, which is further damaging the purpose of cinema, Nana said, “What remains now is what thought you are presenting. Now the kind of movies becoming hit these days, I saw a really big hit film yesterday, I couldn’t watch it completely, but it is a huge hit. And when films like these runs, we keep presenting the same material, and audience is forced into liking it. Now, I am an actor, tomorrow I would like to make my son, an actor, whether he is deserving or not, but I will force this on you. I will keep on making films with him, whether flop or hit, and overtime you will see less of his short-comings, and you get used to him and eventually accept him. And one fine day, that actor will sit on our heads. So, this is the scenario of our film industry these days.”

“There are so many horrendous movies, we’re forced to watch, thinking this is great cinema. And amidst of this, film like The Vaccine War releases, then you realize, oh there is difference between good cinema and bad cinema. The cinema which is bad and is forced upon us, making us believe it is good cinema, and then there is just good cinema, there is huge difference between the two. Parallel Cinema and Commercial Cinema differentiation is not there, this is just good cinema and bad cinema times” added Nana.

The Vaccine War is directed by Vivek Agnihotri, based on the true story of the development of Covaxin during the COVID-19 pandemic in India. The film also features Pallavi Joshi, Raima Sen, Anupam Kher, Girija Oak, Nivedita Bhattacharya, Sapthami Gowda, and Mohan Kapur, slated for 28th September 2023 release.
