Hansika Motwani is an Indian actress who mainly appears in Tamil films. She also appears in Telugu and Hindi films, and has done a number of films in Malayalam and Kannada. Hansika made her film debut in Telugu cinema with Desamuduru film, and became the recipient of numerous accolades, including Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut – South. Motwani appeared in a couple of Telugu movies, including Kantri and Maska. She started her career in Tamil cinema with Mappillai film and then appeared in several highest-grossing Tamil films such as Engeyum Kadhal, Velayudham, Oru Kal Oru Kannadi and Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru. She debuted in Malayalam cinema with Villain film.

Early life

Hansika Motwani was born to a Sindhi family in Mumbai. Her father, Pradeep Motwani is a businessman and her mother, Mona Motwani is a dermatologist. Motwani attended the Podar International School at Mumbai and the International Curriculum School, Santacruz.


Hansika began her television career with a serial called Shaka Laka Boom Boom. She later acted in the Indian serial Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand and appeared as one of the children in Koi Mil Gaya with Preity Zinta and Hrithik Roshan. Hansika made her debut at the age of 15 in as a lead role in Puri Jagannadh's Telugu film Desamuduru and earned the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut – South for her performance. She made her debut at the age of 16 as a leading actress in a Bollywood film Aap Kaa Surroor with Himesh Reshammiya. She then signed the Hindi film titled He: The Only One, and played a role of killer. Hansika's first 2008 release was Bindaas, starring Puneeth Rajkumar, her first and only Kannada film to date. Later that year, she appeared Kantri film with Jr. NTR.


Hansika debuted in Tamil cinema with Mappillai film. Her next Tamil film, Engeyum Kadhal was a successful one. The 2011 film Velayudham, in which she starred alongside Vijay, playing a village belle first time. In 2012, Hansika had two releases, one in Tamil and anpther in Telugu. Her first release was M. Rajesh's romantic comedy film Oru Kal Oru Kannadi which became her first runaway hit and earned a positive reviews for her performance. In Telugu, she was featured in Denikaina Ready which also earned a positive response from the public. She received her first Best Actress nomination at the 60th Filmfare Awards South for her performance in the films. In 2013, she appeared in four Tamil films such as Settai, Sundar C.'s Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru, Hari's Singam II starring Suriya and Venkat Prabhu's Biriyani with Suriya's brother Karthi. She had five releases in 2014, two of them were Telugu films, the comedy flick Pandavulu Pandavulu Thummeda and the action-masala film Power. Her Tamil release was the fantasy film Maan Karate, Sundar C's horror comedy Aranmanai and the action thriller film Meaghamann. Aambala, her third collaboration with Sundar C, was her first 2015 release. She also appeared in Vaalu film with Silambarasan. In 2015, her movie Romeo Juliet directed by Lakshman was released on 12 June 2015. It received mixed reviews and was a profitable venture at the box office. Hansika received praise from critics for her performance in the film. The magnum opus film Puli was not a successful one.


In 2016, Aranmanai 2 directed by Sundar C. received mixed reviews. She had a list of flops later that year, including Uyire Uyire and Pokkiri Raja. Her last release in 2016 was Manithan in which she played a teacher's role. She won praise for her depiction of Priya. Bogan was her first release in 2017 and it was reviewed positively. Many critics praised Motwani for her performance in the introduction scene and the pre-climax scene. She also acted in a Telugu film Luckunnodu. Motwani debuted in Malayalam films with Villain in 2017. Her first release of 2018 was Gulebakavali in which she played a con-artist's role named Viji.. Her other release of 2018 was Thuppakki Munai, starring Vikram Prabhu. In 2019, she appeared with Atharvaa in 100, a Tamil film directed by Sam Anton. Her next films were woman centric film Maha directed by U. R Jameel, a Tamil project Partner and an Untitled heroine centric film.

Personal life

Hansika participates in philanthropic activities. She provides monetary support for the education of 25 underprivileged children and also takes care of the medical needs of 10 women who are suffering with breast cancer. She is the brand Ambassador of Chennai turns Pink, an awareness program to promote breast cancer awareness among women. In 2014, she was featured in Forbes's 250 celebrities list.
